AT&T to Offer $50 Netbooks

netbook

AT&T will begin selling netbooks with integrated wireless Internet cards, selling them for as low as $50 — with a data plan contract, of course. The rollout will begin in Atlanta and Philadelphia.

AT&T is also looking to enter the e-book market, according a company exec quoted by Bloomberg at the recent trade show in Las Vegas hosted by industry organization CTIA Wireless:

The Kindle, which lets users download books over Sprint Nextel Corp.’s network, has done a “phenomenal job,” and AT&T wants to be part of that market, Glenn Lurie, head of emerging devices at AT&T, said today. — Bloomberg.com

Verizon has also expressed interest in entering the e-reader fray, saying it had been approached by five (undisclosed) companies interested in a wireless connection like that of the Kindle.

The takeaway: AT&T’s netbook announcement, along with an earlier one from Verizon, suggests these tiny laptops are increasingly being positioned as much as an additional mobile network-connected device as a supplemental computer.

It’s unclear if the AT&T exec’s remarks on e-readers are anything more than an off-the-cuff response to the success of the Kindle. But the notion of another carrier joining Sprint — the carrier the Kindle uses — in the e-book business is intriguing. Wireless access to content is one of the most compelling aspects of the Kindle, giving it the edge over competitors like the Sony Reader (which we’ve covered in the past). The other is access to the huge library of e-content  — Amazon’s 250,000 Kindle titles in the case of the Kindle. And to offer a compelling option to the Kindle, AT&T, Verizon, or any other carrier, will need to find a content partner with a competitive library. It isn’t immediately clear who might be able to offer that (perhaps other than Sony, with its Reader library.)

Apple’s New Imac

imac-one-screen

The new Apple iMac computer priced at $1,499 really shows incredible  high performance and speed in it’s sleekly elegant all-in-one design!  The new iMac comes in both a 20 and 24 inch wide screen. Movies and photos display incredibly vivid clarity and color with a resolution of  1,920x 1,080.

To save room on your desktop and get a better view of the monitor, the stand can be removed and mounted to the wall with the VESA Mount Adapter Kit which comes separately.

The external aesthetics have changed very little with the new Apple iMac however, the internal hardrive did receive a pretty major overhaul. The 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo has not changed since the previous $1,499 but the default hard drive, the graphics chip, and the memory have all been upgraded  with 4GB of RAM and a 640GB hard drive.

iMac Keyboard

The extra-thin keyboard is enclosed in anondized aluminum and  offers a nice responsive feel. Better yet, it is 35% smaller than most keyboards!   The iMac  keyboard also has special function keys for one-touch control of Mac features, and two USB 2.0 port that provide high-speed connectivity to your  digital camera, ipod and other devices.

We love and use the previous Imac and recommend Apple’s latest iMac release as well. The Apple Imac at $1,495 is one of the most affordable all-in-on PC’S on the market.

New Dell Adamo Laptop

Design:

The Adamo is a laptop build from many parts aluminum. It’s decorated with three different finishes of black metal, including a classy matte grain that makes up a majority of the case, but then Dell tops all that blackness off with two more touches of black plastic (keyboard and mouse buttons) and a tempered glass (infront and behind the screen) to add a bit of gloss to the mix.

The Tweetie Mac Client

twitter-client-tweetie2It seems as though every day now there is news and now new products coming out to support Twitter. Do a search online and you will find endless applications for people’s social networking profiles such as Tweeter for Facebook.

The new Tweetie download for the desktop version of the already incredibly popular Iphone client has been eagerly awaiting all the Twitter addicts and should not disappoint! It does deliver and has lots of features that makes this $19.95 price tag seem like a real bargain!

Tweetie is a  fairly full fledged Twitter application that features a unique UI with separate sections for messages, your friend’s timelines and replies. You can easily find recent tweets and  follower/following status by clicking the user icons through conversation chains.

There are shortcuts galore with Tweetie and you can even close the main window and tweet in a separate window if you find your fellow Twitter friends too annoying.  Annoying and Twitter??

Aesthetically,  Tweetie looks super! Navigation between sections is a smooth transition and the interface looks clean. One of the best things that we like at GearYak, is that Tweetie supports multiple accounts. You can use one for your business profile and one for your personal use.

Price tag? Tweeite for Mac 1.0 has been released to you in both free and paid versions. It depends on if you mind the bothersome ads that you find on free uploads. $19.95 is well worth the price of ad free Twittering! Until May 4. you can buy Tweetie for $14.95!

Netflix coming to PS3?

netflix-logoWhile streaming Netflix videos has been a Xbox 360 exclusive for quite a while, one has to wonder when they will extend this service to other gaming platforms.

A recent job listing on Monster by Netflix, looking for an “experienced engineer to lead the gaming platform team”, suggests that they plan on extending to more gaming consoles. But which gaming consoles, the job listing doesn’t list any specific ones.

Here is a picture of the Monster job listing:

With the PS3 being very capable for something like this, already having an internet browser, and the ability to stream videos, it seems almost imminent. As far as the rumors because of the job listing, the recent Netflix survey that appeared shortly before that suggests the same idea. The survey asked subscribers whether they’d be willing to pay a one-time fee of $10 to stream video to their PS3s.

As for the question “what other gaming consoles” Netflix has in mind, the Nintendo Wii, and even the Playstation Portable (PSP) are both a possibility.

Whether or not Netflix will infact have a service for the PS3, and if they are, when will it be available, is still yet to be known.

Skype To Sell Paid Phone Ads

skypeSkype has come up with another really clever idea to make even more money, through paid phone ads. Their goal is to increase revenues to $1 billion by 2011 from it’s current $551 million, and from the looks of it they are on track!

They have begun trials in Europe and New Zealand, turning business phone number searches into phone calls. How this works, is a business phone number that shows up in search results would be hyperlinked in order to launch a Skype call.

Yellow Pages businesses will buy up the calling minutes in bulk and then decide how they want to charge the businesses that list with them, either with pay per clicks or a flat rate.

Skype already accounts for a whopping 8% of international calls, with many members already paying for Skypeout calls to regular phones. While Ebay plans to shed Skype from it’s impressive portfolio of winners next year through a sale or Ipo, they continue to look for ways to make money. Positioning itself as a tool for the booming $32 million online Yellow Pages business is just another brilliant Ebay strategy that certainly seems like a winner!

nintendo-wii-motion-plus-3d-addonNintendo is set to release their latest product to come out on June 8, the Wii Motion Plus. The Motion Plus is an add on that will enable you to get more accuracy in 3-D space from your beloved  Wiimotes.

The Wii Motion Plus attaches to the end of the Wii Remote and gives a player more comprehensive tracking and precision. Every movement registers in real time on the screen giving you a more exciting and enjoyable gaming experience.

This newest addtion to the Nintendo line up is designed to compliment their addtional Wii product, the Wii Sports Resort, that is slated to hit the market on July 26 . The  Nintendo Wii Sports Resort takes the original Wii Sports to the next level with activities such as dueling with swords, throwing frisbies with Fido and cruising on a water scooter.

How much does the Wii Motion Plus cost? Depends on how many players you have in your household! Each Unit will cost $20 and combined with the WiiSports Resort, the price tag will be mere $49!  Not bad for what appears to be very precise and entertaining gaming techology!
