Skype has come up with another really clever idea to make even more money, through paid phone ads. Their goal is to increase revenues to $1 billion by 2011 from it’s current $551 million, and from the looks of it they are on track!
They have begun trials in Europe and New Zealand, turning business phone number searches into phone calls. How this works, is a business phone number that shows up in search results would be hyperlinked in order to launch a Skype call.
Yellow Pages businesses will buy up the calling minutes in bulk and then decide how they want to charge the businesses that list with them, either with pay per clicks or a flat rate.
Skype already accounts for a whopping 8% of international calls, with many members already paying for Skypeout calls to regular phones. While Ebay plans to shed Skype from it’s impressive portfolio of winners next year through a sale or Ipo, they continue to look for ways to make money. Positioning itself as a tool for the booming $32 million online Yellow Pages business is just another brilliant Ebay strategy that certainly seems like a winner!
